Our annual Veteran’s Day Chapel to honor America’s heroes was wonderful. The Lower Campus gym was filled to capacity with parents, honored guests and students. All were greeted with patriotic décor and children dressed in red, white and blue. The program was highlighted by Middle School students reading their winning essays on What Makes America Great. Our 5th grade girls sang, Johnny Has Gone for a Soldier, while dressed in period costumes and the Pure Joy choir entertained the gathering with their performance of the Battle Hymn of the Republic.
Among the many veterans in attendance was 99-year-old WW2 Army veteran Don Hitzel who also stayed after the chapel to talk with the 8th grade class. Our featured speaker as Maj Jodie Heitzman, USAF (Ret), who served 20+ years in the Air Force as a Women’s Health Care Nurse Practitioner. Maj Heitzman answered questions about why she joined the military, her many different assignments in the Air Force, and most importantly, how she came to know Jesus as her Savior. She also discussed how her faith and military experience has led her to her new passion – serving in the mission field. A brief history of the bugle call Taps was relayed to the audience and was played by Mr. Brown to remember our fallen heroes. Our program concluded with the Elementary singing and waving flags to the traditional Grand Ole Flag!
