Teaming Up!…with Mr. Ricks

Chapels…We were blessed greatly by our last two chapel speakers, Wendy Liddell, President of a new local Christian College called Great Northern and Steve Stager, Pastor at Foothills Community  Church.  Wendy is a positive Christian leader in our community who encouraged students to embrace God’s plan for their life through the joys and the challenges, trusting Him with their whole heart. Steve Stager wrapped up our “United in Purpose” theme in our last chapel. The title of his message was  Divinely Called, Uniquely Prepared, Intentionally Positioned for Impact! He shared from Mark 10:32-45 “…For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.“ Pastor Stager challenged the students to be aware of two misguided philosophies pervading our culture: Consumerist Christianity (a selfish approach which says, “What’s in it for me?” and Comparison Christianity (doing just a little better than the other person). He challenged students to ask Christ to embolden them in their faith, passion, sacrifice and service. He finished by sharing an example of the 1940 Tacoma Bridge “Galloping Gertie” collapse. The illustration was a very intriguing visual example to demonstrate the scientific term “aeroelastic flutter” (resonance). Specifically, and for the point of the message, it showed how God works in powerful ways when we work together and when we are truly United in Purpose! Thanks to our great chapel speakers this past month!

Spirit Week and Homecoming…October 9th-12th proved to be an epic Homecoming Week at the High School! Each day was themed for dress: Taco Tuesday, What a Meme Wednesday, Throwback Thursday, plus Freedom Friday. The entire student body celebrated throughout the week with  activities, special lunches and sporting events. Sport highlights included an amazing, last minute game winning goal by Natalie Smith to defeat St. Georges in soccer; Silas Perreiah’s 5 touchdown-372 yard performance to secure the win against Wilbur-Creston in football; and Jordan Rabe’s multiple touchdowns and follow-up TV interview in the Crusader Powder Puff football game!  Friday featured our first-ever home football game with a post-game tailgate hot dog feed and the showing of Woodlawn, a football movie with a strong, Christ-centered message. Special thanks to our awesome cheerleaders, pep band and ASB for making Freedom Friday and Homecoming Week an awesome memory!

Conference Week…Parents, thank you for attending conferences on October 17th and 18th, and allowing us the privilege to team up with you in the mind and heart ministry of your high school student. The conversations were valuable and your availability and flexibility during conference week was greatly appreciated! If you were not able to attend the conferences and need to connect with a teacher, please feel free to email the teacher directly. The email addresses are the first letter and last name of each employee @ nwcs.org (ex. Ray Ricks is rricks@nwcs.org).

Senior Retreat…Special thanks to Mrs. Mossey, Mrs. Friedly, Mr. Taylor and  the entire senior advising team for hosting a superb retreat at Riverview Bible Camp. Our theme, “Rooted, Established, Sent!” included Biblically-based leadership discussions on vision, encouragement, character, affirmation and legacy. Worship, scripture reading, journaling,
team-building activities, ropes courses, prayer times and class discussions were part of this strategic time together. We are proud of this wonderful group of 71 seniors and it is an honor to see them grow in their faith, maturity, sensitivity and unity!

Communication Items: Please Welcome….Cara Covey! Although Cara is new to our staff as our High School Lunch Coordinator, she is not new to NWC!  Her father, Mike Stepper, started the NWC Soccer program in the early 1990’s. (Dr. Hancock was the assistant coach!)  Cara and her husband, Jed, have been married for 19 years and their four children attend NWC. They have two daughters, one in the Elementary and one in Middle School. Both of their sons are in High School, playing on our NWC football team. They worship at Calvary Chapel in Deer Park. Cara is enthused to provide healthy, homemade options to our menu including fresh fruits, salads, wraps, etc.  She recently made chocolate chip oatmeal cookies and her Sophomore “test market” gave them two-thumbs up! Cara says she loves feedback, so if you ever have a suggestion or comment, please email her at ccovey@nwcs.org. Welcome to NWC, Cara!

Absences and Illness: If you have a sick or absent student, please call the office at (509) 238-4005, option 1 on the Absent/Tardy line to let the school know.

Crusader News: Each week on Monday, we will be emailing a weekly news page called the Cru News. It will contain the most pertinent High School scheduling items and home sporting events. In addition, the NWC Student Pipeline on your student’s Office365 OneNote account has current schedules and information for you to view. We hope these items will help you stay connected to the HS and your student.

Until next month…
