What We Believe…

  • When a child’s learning needs are being met, the child can focus more clearly on spiritual, social and academic matters.
  • Growth should be the goal in learning.  The process may look different and take longer, but all children can grow to their God-given potential.
  • The dignity of each child is of paramount importance.

Learning Center programs cannot succeed in isolation.  There must be a team approach that includes the administration, classroom teacher, parents, and even outside resources, when necessary.

What Services Do We Offer?

When classroom support is not enough…

Dyslexic Program:

We use the Susan Barton Reading and Spelling Program.  This is an Orton-Gillingham based curriculum that has been research proven as the most effective way to teach a dyslexic student how to read, write, and spell.  Students are taken out of class for 30 – 45 minutes 2 times a week, and typically finish the program within 3 – 5 years.

*The Dyslexic Program is a 3-5+ year commitment depending on the student’s level of need.

Direct Instruction Reading Program:

For students that do not fit the dyslexic profile, we offer small group direct instruction using SRA’s Reading Mastery program.

Math Support Program:

Depending on student need, we offer direct instruction for mathematics.

“Our daughter was diagnosed as profoundly dyslexic in the 2nd grade.  We knew that something wasn’t quite right when she would try to write and read.  She would read a word on one line, and then not be able to recognize the same word, two lines later.  She struggled to spell high-frequency words and she just didn’t seem to be progressing like she should be.  At first, we were devastated.  We didn’t know where to turn, and spent thousands of dollars on ‘treatments’ that claimed to help dyslexic students.  When we finally found the Susan Barton program (Dyslexic Program) at NWC, we were so thrilled!  It is giving her the skills that she needs to read, write, and spell successfully.  After 2 years she is almost reading at grade level, and knows more spelling rules than I do!  I only wish we would have found it sooner!”
